Confidentiality
Client information/files are confidential. In most cases information is only released with the client’s verbal and/or written consent and only to the client’s caregivers (e.g., physicians, health care professionals). Consultation with the family physician may be beneficial to ensure that an optimal care plan is developed for you. The following situations, however, are exceptions to the above:
- if a client discloses the intent to seriously harm herself/himself or harm someone else
- If a court of law subpoenas a client’s clinical records (e.g., a custody or criminal case)
- If it becomes known that a child is at risk for physical or sexual abuse or neglect, then the Children’s Aid Society must be notified.
- If a client who is a health professional has sexually abused a patient it must be reported to the health professional’s regulatory body or college.
